Professor drª Ana Paiva

Ana Paiva is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) from the University of Lisbon and is also the Coordinator of GAIPS – “Group of Artificial Intelligence for People and Society ” at INESC-ID (see http://gaips.inesc-id.pt/gaips/). Her group investigates the creation of complex systems using an agent-based approach, with a special focus on social agents. Prof. Paiva’s main research focuses on the problems and techniques for creating social agents that can simulate human-like behaviours, be transparent, natural and eventually, give the illusion of life. Over the years she has addressed this problem by engineering agents that exhibit specific social capabilities, including emotions, personality, culture, non-verbal behaviour, empathy, collaboration, and others. Her main contributions in the area of social agents have been in the field of embodied conversational agents, multi-agent systems, affective computing, prosocial computing and social robotics.

Professor drª Mireille Hildebrandt

Mireille Hildebrandt is a Research Professor on 'Interfacing Law and Technology' at Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), appointed by the VUB Research Council. She is Co-Director of the research group on Law Science Technology and Society studies (LSTS) at the Faculty of Law and Criminology. She also holds the part-time Chair of Smart Environments, Data Protection and the Rule of Law at the Science Faculty, at the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences (iCIS) at Radboud University Nijmegen. Her research interests concern the implications of automated decisions, machine learning and mindless artificial agency for law and the rule of law in constitutional democracies. Hildebrandt has published 4 scientific monographs, 22 edited volumes or special issues, and over 100 chapters and articles in scientific journals and volumes. Professor drº Steve Fuller

Steve Fuller is Auguste Comte Professor of Social Epistemology in the Department of Sociology at the University of Warwick, UK. The author of twenty-five books, much of Fuller's recent work has been concerned with the future of humanity (or 'Humanity 2.0'). His latest books are Post-Truth: Knowledge as a Power Game (Anthem, 2018) and Nietzschean Meditations: Untimely Thoughts at the Dawn of the Transhuman Era (Schwabe Verlag, 2019). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the Royal Society of Arts and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
